Makeup Shelf Life

I’m often asked how long should you hold on to makeup products and when you should throw them out and I’m pretty sure we’re all guilty of hanging on to the odd eye shadow or mascara longer than we should but out of date products can do you more harm than good. Bacteria builds up in products the more you use them so by not throwing them away within the recommended time frame you can’t be sure what kind of negative effects they might have on your skin.

You can pretty much tell when a product isn’t at it’s best by looking at it and it really depends on how much you use the product but below is a quick guideline to the type of products and how you can tell it’s time to replace them…

Mascara:

Mascara’s in particular have the shortest shelf life especially if it’s one you use regularly. The easiest way to tell is if the “popping” sound is gone. The more you use a mascara the more air is trapped inside the container so it will dry up quicker. This means it’s time for a new one.

Foundations & Concealers:

With foundations you will be able to tell if they have started to separate or just don’t have look right. Try keep your foundation away from heat as this is an environment that bacteria just loves! With concealers, powder and stick products can last up to 2 years but liquid formulas have a shorter shelf life. Again the colour and consistency will be a giveaway.

Powders:

Powders can be a little harder to tell especially loose ones but with a powder whether it be blush, eye shadows or other face powders, you are continually putting your brush or puff into the pot so this is transferring oil and residue from your face back into the product so this is where washing your brushes is very important. With pressed powders you might see a skin form, this is the oil from you face or eyelids effecting the product so you can remove the top layer of product to reveal fresh powder below.

Pencils:

For eye and lip pencils you should pair them with a good sharpener to refresh them regularly. You can tell they have gone off when they start to form a film on the nib. You do need to be very careful with eyeliners as you are applying them to a very sensitive part of the face and if you use these too far beyond their expiry date you may end up with a nasty infection so just don’t risk it!

Lipsticks:

Your favourite lipstick or lip gloss I’m sure will be used long before it reaches it’s shelf life but for those you only wear occasionally you really need to replace these after 2 years. If you’ve been sick or suffer from cold sores it’s a good idea to replace them more regularly or you could use a lip brush which will stop direct contact. You’ll know your lipstick has gone off if it has gone hard and doesn’t apply properly.

Nail Polish:

Everyone pretty well knows when these are gone off. They tend to go gloopy and harder to apply.

So I hope this helps… now get that make-up bag and start sorting!

Liz Earle Skin Tint

It’s no secret really that I’m in LOVE with Liz Earle products and when I heard that she was launching the Liz Earle Skin Tint I was more than excited to say the least. I had heard great reports of it and it was a few weeks after the UK launch that I got mine delivered, all wrapped up beautifully, in their fabulous green packaging :). I’ve been using it now for the last few weeks and I have to say I love it!

Firstly, this isn’t a foundation or a tinted moisturiser. This has more coverage than a tinted moisturiser but less than a foundation and where the last two are just really for evening out your skin tone and don’t really benefit your skin, this Skin Tint can actually help improve your skins condition. It has mineral UV SPF15 and contains vitamin E, borage and avocado which are all really good for your skin. They describe it as “A rich and creamy, yet lightweight formula leaves all skin types looking naturally dewy, even and radiant”, which it certainly does for me. However, if you like your base with more coverage then this probably isn’t a product for you.

My first impression was it was quite rich, with a slightly tacky feel when applied, which I wasn’t mad about. I thought it was going to be too greasy for my skin as I’m quite oily on my T-zone, however it settled really nicely and didn’t feel like I was wearing anything after a while. I did need to use a little powder on top to get ride of some shine but I always have to use powder with my foundation so that wasn’t a big deal for me. It also doesn’t clog your pores or settle in fine lines, which will be a big plus for a lot of us! You also don’t need to use a lot of it so the tube should last quite a long time and it wears really well throughout the day. For someone who only really wears powder mineral make-up during the day, this is great for those days I have a meeting or I’m going out after work.

It comes in 3 shades, which isn’t a lot really but my understanding is that this is just the initial launch and they will be releasing new products over the next year, with possibly more tint shades. The shades are:

Bare 01 – The palest shade, this suits fair, alabaster complexions

Beige 02 – The medium shade, this suits the majority of Caucasian skins.

Beach 03 – The darkest shade, this works well for suntanned, olive-toned and most Asian skin tones.

When you get your foundation, it comes with a sample sachet of all three shades also. They ask you to try them all first to see if the shade you have order is correct for your skin colour which is a great idea. It means then if the one you have ordered is wrong for you you can exchange it no problem. The colour I ordered, Beige 02 was a perfect match for my skin shade so I was very happy with that.

Skin Ttint might not suit everyone, especially very young or oily skin but my mum, who would have more mature skin and finds she needs something more moisturising, loves this and finds it perfect for her skin.

On my last trip into Wilde & Green in Miltown they hadn’t got it in stock yet but I think they’re stocking it from December (you might need to double check that), or you can get it on the website http://ie.lizearle.com/make-up/sheer-skin-tint-spf15.html and it’s €24 for a 40ml tube.

Another Liz Earle product to add to my ‘Love List’ and I’d love to hear what you guys think of it if you do give it a try.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural

I was first introduced to MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural on Zoe Clarks Bridal Course (http://www.zoeclark.com) and it’s become my everyday make-up since then. I’ve never been a girl who wears lots of make-up on a daily basis, as I like to let my skin breath as much as possible but then also like a little coverage to hide any imperfections so this suited me perfectly. While the MAC Face & Body would be my ‘going out’ or ‘special occasion’ foundation, this is my ‘day to day’, ‘can’t live without’ foundation.

The first thing that I love about it is the fact that you can use as little or as much as you like to achieve the coverage you want. I would say that its really a light to medium coverage product as if you go too heavy you run the risk of it looking cakey. I use it with my MAC kabuki brush (182) which allows you to really buff it in and get a flawless finish which looks like you have nothing on at all.

They don’t have a huge range of colours (there are 8, ranging from ‘Light’ to ‘Dark’) and I have 2, the ‘Light’ and the ‘Meduim’ which I use on their own or mix up depending on whether I have a bit of a tan or not. The other great thing about it, is it can also be used over your normal foundation as a powder or the darker ones can be used as a bronzer so it’s very multi-functional which is good on your purse! It last for ages too, I only replaced mine a few weeks ago after almost a year, so for 27Euro it’s great value.

I found it doesn’t irritate my skin at all either, in fact I think it’s actually helped improve my skin since using it and I get quite shiny along my ‘T’ Zone so it’s great for mattifying the skin too. The MSN would also work great for summer brides who might be getting married away in the sun and need something that won’t melt away or cake your skin.

Overall I just love this product and would highly recommend it especially as the summer approaches and you might want something lighter to wear.

The Foundation of good make-up!

I get the bus to work every morning and this morning I was sitting opposite a girl in her early 20’s I think. Many women use the morning commute as a chance to do their make-up and this girl was one of them. She was beautiful, amazing pale skin and striking features and as I watched she proceeded to start applying her foundation. To my horror this stunning girl turned from pale to orange in a matter of seconds… I was probably staring but I couldn’t help it! She layered and layered the foundation on so it was like a mask covering her whole face. I might understand her wanting to do this if she had problem skin but she didn’t!

Anyway, it got me thinking of how many women just don’t use foundation the way they should and are probably wearing the wrong colour as well. I know in the beginning, when I started training as a make-up artist it was the one thing I wanted to know, how to find the perfect foundation. So here I will just give a few pointers that I think every woman should know about foundation.

Firstly, foundation should only be used to even out your natural skin colour and tone. It should NOT be used to make you more tanned or cover any major flaws or blemishes on your skin. Concealer should be used to cover these and then your bronzer and blusher used to add colour and contour your face. One of my favourite foundations and one I use a lot is the MAC Face & Body. Its a lightweight foundation that goes on very easily and gives a lovely flawless cover. Perfect if you don’t like wearing anything too heavy or just for daytime. I use a sponge when applying it to get a seamless look.

If you prefer something a little heavier the MAC Studio Sculpt is very good and again goes on quite easily but another favourite of mine is the NARS Sheer Glow. It’s like velvet going on your skin and gives a gorgeous finish. Perfect for brides! You can get this in a matt version also. It’s a little pricey but will last you ages as you shouldn’t need a lot. For older skin the Armani foundations are lovely and have that extra coverage you might need.

With all foundations though, you can use as little or as much as you like to get the coverage that you prefer but I would always say less is more. You want your skin to breath and look it’s best, not look caked or overdone. I think every woman wants to look like the best version of themselves so just keep this in mind when applying your base. And remember, if you have your foundation right you shouldn’t have that line around your jaw line that you see so often.
